How to compare Private Medical Insurance plans

The PMI industry has been criticised for making plans difficult to compare, however there are 3 main categories: -

Comprehensive

- policies that provide full cover for essential treatment, outpatient cover and consultations.

Standard

- policies that cover for essential treatment but with restrictions. They offer slightly better benefits and outpatient coverage than budget plans but less coverage than comprehensive plans.

Budget

- policies that provide minimal cover. Often these plans have limited or no outpatient care.

The cover that is offered by each policy defines core benefits, such as inpatient and outpatient treatment. On some Comprehensive and Standard plans there are added outpatient services, the provision of home nursing and private ambulance services and routine dentistry, physiotherapy, psychiatric treatment, complimentary medicines and other benefits. Some plans in these groups utilise Independent Units within NHS Trust Hospitals. Comparing the plans on a "like for like" basis can be problematic and does require some consideration to the kind of cover you require. It also makes it impossible to compare plans purely on the basis of cost.
