Long Term Care Activities of Daily Living
The common Activities of Daily Living are listed below. Definitions vary between providers of Long Term Care. There is not a uniform standard laid down by the Association of British Insurers and plan-holders should pay particular attention to this.
For example, one provider operates a wider definition of ‘mobility’, which includes ability to use stairs, whereas most providers only consider ability to move from room to room on the same level.
- Mobility
- Transferring
- Washing
- Dressing
- Feeding
- Toileting
- Continence
- Mental Impairment
Ability to move from one room to another in your normal residence.
Ability to move from a bed to a chair and vice versa
Ability to wash by any means, so that he or she can maintain a reasonable level of personal cleanliness.
Ability to put on, take off, fasten and unfasten all necessary clothing, and where appropriate any braces, artificial limbs or other surgical appliances.
Ability to feed oneself once food has been prepared and made available.
Ability to get on or off the toilet or commode.
Ability to manage bowel or bladder function, using protective undergarments or surgical appliances if appropriate, to maintain a reasonable standard of personal hygiene.
Deterioration in or loss of mental capacity which results from an organic cause and is evidenced by deterioration of the insured’s short and long term memory, knowing who and where they are, the identity of others, an awareness of time and the ability to solve simple problems and make rational decisions, resulting in a need for continual care or supervision. Mental impairment will be determined using clinical evidence and recognised tests of mental capacity.
